Children’s Homes
and Training Center Selam, Ethiopia

The relief organisation Selam runs two children’s homes as well as schools and professional training centers in Addis Ababa. Apart from its own 450 orphans another 2500 children from the immediate neighbourhood receive education in the Selam School. Altogether 1000 local staff are employed at Selam.

The professional training center offers apprenticeships for machine electricians, auto mechanics, metal workers and carpenters. Young women have equal educational opportunities with the men and, especially for women, there is the Selam Household School which runs two restaurants and a shop. The well-balanced Swiss apprenticeship system, combining theory and practice, has been especially successful in raising the quality of Ethiopia’s education and training.
